Leaders and residents of Tubur Sub-county in Soroti District have welcomed the construction of the 13-kilometre Achuna–Tubur road, saying the project will ease transportation challenges and stimulate economic activity in the area.

Works on the road officially commenced on Thursday,8th January, 2026  after an earlier launch by Soroti District authorities. The project is being implemented under the district’s road maintenance and development programme for the Financial Year 2025/2026 at a cost of Shs128 million.

Achuna–Tubur road is a strategic community access route that connects villages to key markets, health facilities and schools, the poor condition of the road, especially during the rainy season, has limited movement of people and goods, affecting trade, access to health services and school attendance.

Mr Moses Abaci, the chairperson of Tubur Sub-county, said the road project will address long-standing challenges related to poor road infrastructure in the area.

“This road is very strategic because it links our communities to important places such as markets, health centres and schools. The poor road network has been a major challenge to our people, but this construction will improve mobility and economic activities,” Mr Abaci said.

He thanked the central government and Soroti District Local Government for allocating funds to the project, noting that improved infrastructure is critical for local development.

Residents have also expressed optimism that the road will improve their livelihoods. Ms Mary Akello, a resident of Achuna village, said the poor state of the road had previously made it difficult for families to access medical services and sell their farm produce.

“For a long time, the road has been in a bad condition. When someone is sick, reaching the health centre was very difficult. Transporting agricultural produce to the market was also a challenge. With the road works ongoing, we expect easier movement and better access to services,” Ms Akello said.

Soroti District Senior Engineer Mr Denis Ocung said the road construction was planned under the district’s approved works programme for the current financial year.

He cautioned the community against practices that could damage the road, urging residents to protect the investment.

“We appeal to the local community to guard this road jealously. Activities such as driving ox-ploughs on the road affect its composition and shorten its lifespan,” Mr Ocung said.

The Achuna–Tubur road will improve connectivity within Tubur Sub-county and enhance access to markets and social services, contributing to improved household incomes and local economic growth.
