SOROTI LAUNCHES 9KM LIRA–KAMUDA–ABOKET ROAD PROJECT
By Abraham Ekwaru, Communication Officer Soroti
Soroti District has launched the construction of the 9-kilometre Lira–Kamuda–Aboket Community Access Road in Kamuda Sub-county, a project expected to improve transport, boost trade and ease access to social services.
The launch ceremony was held on Thursday last week and presided over by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr Yeko Bulubulu.
The road links Kamuda Sub-county to key areas, including Aboket trading centre and Aboket landing site, which are important hubs for agricultural and fishing activities.
According to the District Engineer, Mr Okello Simon Ekolu, the project will cost Shs119.6 million. He said the scope of works includes drainage improvement, installation of culverts, grading and reshaping to a width of nine metres, and site clearance along the same corridor.
Mr Okello noted that poor drainage has been a major challenge, especially during the rainy season when sections of the road become impassable.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Bulubulu said the road will ease movement for residents, including school-going children who have faced difficulties accessing schools during heavy rains.
“This road will help our people access health facilities, markets and schools more easily,” Mr Bulubulu said.
He added that improved road connectivity will support beneficiaries of the Parish Development Model (PDM) to transport their produce to markets and increase household incomes.
“A number of community members have accessed PDM funds. With better roads, they can now move their products to market without difficulty,” he said.
The LC III Chairperson of Kamuda Sub-county, Mr Ebanu Joseph, thanked government for funding the project, describing it as timely intervention.
“This road has been in a poor state for a long time. It connects different trading centres and farming communities,” Mr Ebanu said.
He expressed optimism that once completed, the road will improve service delivery, facilitate trade and contribute to socio-economic development in Kamuda Sub-county and surrounding areas.
